Children and Teens

When do I seek counseling for my child or my teen?

When a child’s behavior is problematic at home or at school, counseling could be part of a holistic solution to help your child. Whether it’s ADHD behaviors, aggression, or anxiety, there are tools that can help bring change about in your child and peace of mind to your family.

Parents can expect changes when their children reach their teenage years and much of what families experience can be classified as normal. However, if your teen shows signs of serious depression, isolation from peers, suspected drug use, extreme apathy, a significant drop in school performance, weight loss / gain or cutting (to name a few things), then counseling would be recommended.

Individual Counseling

When is individual counseling helpful?

When stressors become too difficult to manage alone or when depression and / or anxiety become debilitating and encroach on daily functioning, then individual counseling can be beneficial.

Sometimes pressures become too great and our daily ability to function in society diminishes. Or we feel like we will implode and taking care of ourselves properly feels like climbing a mountain.

In these situations, counseling can make accomplishing the tasks of daily life feel more possible. We work with individuals to assess client struggles, create a treatment plan, and work toward a common goal.

Family Counseling

We are Interconnected

Family counseling requires the participation of adults and children. The guiding philosophy of all family therapy is built on the interactions of parents with children and children with parents.

Often family therapy clarifies parenting methods and interactions that affect the responses of children or teens and vice versa. When patterns are discovered and addressed, change becomes possible. It is very difficult for a teenager or child to make lasting changes without the assistance of a parent.

Parents who are willing to look closely at alternative ways of relating with their child or teen can see more immediate and lasting benefits to counseling while teens and children who take responsibility for their behavior will see benefits in their relationships to their parents.

Studies have shown that a family acts as a system so that when change occurs in one member, it forces change in the rest of the family. Therefore, lasting change occurs best when all members are involved in counseling though counseling for children and teens alone without parental involvement can also be beneficial if a teen just needs an outside perspective.
